Rationale for Unit: This unit is the first writing topic in the Boston Public Schools curriculum outline. This unit is designed to be taught over roughly twenty days during our 40-minute writing blocks. This specific unit will engage the students to write about a small moment in their lives that is interesting or important to them. The students will collaborate as a group to help one another with their writing, while sharing their personal stories and editing their peer’s work. Writing a personal narrative will force the students to continue practicing general writing skills, but also force them to stretch out their ideas and completely explain their thoughts with details.Īs the students grow as writers, they will be able to complete more work in a shorter amount of time, allowing more time to add further personal details to their work. We tend to communicate our thoughts in a simple sentence or statement, and then not know how to move forward. Writing stories can be a very difficult task for second graders. As we broaden our vocabulary, it is expected that the students use these vocabulary words frequently in their educational work and preferably in their daily lives. We have been working on letter formation and writing in complete sentences, starting each sentence with a capitalization and concluding with a punctuation mark. They will have to come up with a specific event, or small moment, that happened to them and write about it. It will hit numerous standards from the Common Core Curriculum, and requires the students to think about what they are writing and why. “Personal Narratives” is the first writing unit to be taught in this classroom. Second graders are expected to write more complex sentences, fully communicate their ideas, and use a more diverse range of vocabulary. Writing in second grade is much more stressed, as it is necessary to complete almost every assignment in each subject.
Narrative: As the students begin to adjust from first to second grade, they are quickly learning that expectations for second graders are generally higher than in first grade.
